Gondola Medical Technologies first launched Gondola AMPS therapy for people with walking and balance problems due to neurological disorders in 2011. Since then, the company has successfully helped many patients with Parkinson's disease regain their independence. Gondola AMPS therapy for home use lasts only 2 minutes, is noninvasive, has no side effects, and improves motor symptoms such as Freezing of gait or motor blocks.
Since Parkinson's disease symptoms are generally treated with dopamine or deep brain stimulation (DBS), a rehabilitative and noninvasive approach such as Gondola AMPS therapy is unusual. The question that comes to mind is “is Gondola AMPS therapy too good to be true” and is it “science or magic”?
The current understanding of the nervous system provides the answers. The human nervous system can be divided into two parts: the central nervous system (CNS) and the peripheral nervous system (SNP). The CNS consists of the brain and spinal cord, while the SNP consists of nerves that transmit information to and from the brain. Traditionally, all gait, balance and movement problems were treated by focusing on the CNS and the brain. However, we now know that the SNP can also affect the CNS, for example through Gondola's Automated Mechanical Peripheral Stimulation (AMPS).
The mechanism of action associated with AMPS Therapy is thought to be an enhancement of synaptic plasticity resulting in the strengthening of neural circuits involved in the automaticity of walking. Results from clinical studies supported this text since they found increased connectivity between brain regions involved in gait control and an increase in brain-derived neurotrophic factor, which is an essential regulator of synaptic plasticity that aids motor learning.
In addition, the effectiveness of Gondola AMPS therapy has been documented in 12 clinical research studies on more than 230 patients with Parkinson's disease. Results indicated that after AMPS therapy, increased walking speed, faster Timed-Up-and-Go times, increased stride length, more symmetrical gait, and improved turning ability were observed.
Gondola Medical Technologies is committed to scientific research and will continue to support objective research to help people with neurological disorders regain their independence. So, is Gondola AMPS therapy science or magic? It is science, but it feels like magic to be able to move free again.
